On 27th January, 1915, the 1st Loyal North Lancashire battalion of 2 Brigade, 1st Division moved into the front line at Cuinchy, near La Bassée and that night carried out two operations against a forward post held by the enemy and a section of their trench. Both of these failed and after spending the next day in these trenches they were relieved during the evening of 28th January when they moved back into reserve at Pont Fixe. At 8.30am on 29th January, the day on which Leslie Flecknoe was killed, the enemy opened up a heavy bombardment on the front line followed by an attack which was seen of by the 2nd Royal Sussex battalion. In their reserve positions, the 1st Loyal North Lancashire battalion also came under shell fire and suffered some casualties. |
